Palestra MR3: : Developing Data Literacy through the STEM Investigation Process in Classrooms
Minicurso M10: Supporting young learners in understanding our world through data – the power of STEM education
Objetivo: Our lives are shaped by data – data about our environment, our communities, and ourselves. In addition to mathematics and especially statistics teaching, this also affects all other STEAM disciplines like sciences and social studies. Because data is relevant in all those disciplines, working with and learning from data – in other words data literacy – should be addressed in various subjects from a transdisciplinary perspective and from an early age onwards.
In this workshop, we will therefore explore ways in which this approach to working with and learning from data can be implemented in elementary school settings. The aim is to foster STEAM learning among young learners by working with data, without having to rely on formal statistical concepts. We will focus on how we can implement data literacy lessons in the STEAM classroom and consider issues of social justice and civic engagement as a starting point. Materials from the DataScEd4CiEn project will be introduced.
The workshop will be held in English with translation into Portugese.
